Aquatic Invasive Plants

The following is an incomplete list of aquatic invasive plants found in, or adjacent to, the Capital-Mohawk PRISM. Click on the name to read individual species details courtesy of NYIS.

Emerging

Emerging plants are species that have not established fully in the region, giving us a chance to stop these invaders in their tracks through eradication and rapid response efforts. If you believe you have identified one of these plants, please contact PRISM staff using the contact page and/or upload your observation to iMapInvasives. This list is reviewed by the Aquatics Committee on an annual basis, so check back to see updates on what has been seen around the PRISM in the past year.

Factsheets for each of these species are coming soon.
Tier 1 Species (Not yet in PRISM):
  • Alternanthera philoxeroides, Alligatorweed

Widespread Aquatic Invasive Plants

These widespread invasive species have become some of the most common plants in our region. These plants crowd out native species and are generally unpalatable to aquatic species, which increases their competitive advantage. PRISM staff are always available to teach identification workshops for these species.

Factsheets for each of these species are coming soon.
  • Butomus umbellatus, Flowering Rush
  • Myriophyllum spicatum, Eurasian Watermilfoil
  • Najas minor, Brittle Naiad
  • Potamogeton crispus, Curly Leaf Pondweed
  • Trapa natans, Water Chestnut
